Event: “MIR JAFAR”
Centre Stage Creations and Sanskriti Sagar is doing this in association with Bratyajan
Synopsis:
After producing ‘Boma’ in the year 2015, Bratya Basu is all set to present another interesting period-piece in 2018. He has chosen the untold history of Bengal spanning between 1757 and 1764. The context of the play, ‘Mir Jafar’ is the battle of Palassey when Bengal’s last Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula fought gallantly but lost the battle against Lord Clive. Mir Jafar, commander of Siraj, betrayed Nawab to earn the credit of a traitor. The narrative delves deep into this crucial period of history to unfold the gradual but firm invasion of the East India Company into Bengal in their quest for achieving the status of a strong colonial power. It shows the catastrophic end of a divided dynasty in a bid to dominate Bengal even at the cost of losing their freedom to a foreign power. The play showcases the power politics and game of minds to unravel the complexities in which ‘Mir Jafar’ continues to retain the emblematic representation and throne of the ‘universal betrayer’ in all societies in all times.
