Nag tibba! Nag refers to the “god of snakes” i.e “naag devta” from Hindu mythology and tibba is a local word for hills. It is at an altitude of approx. 3025 meters. The mountain range lies in Garwhal Himalayas, Uttarakhand and is the highest peak amongst the three principal ranges of lower Himalayas.
On your way to the top, is the famous Nag devta temple. Locals offer their prayers and are very sensitive devotees. It is believed that Nag devta is the protector of local area and saves the cattle from wild animal attack in the nearby areas. If camping near temple area, abstain from eating non-veg and drinking alcohol as it is strictly prohibited. Follow the same if you plan to visit the temple.
The journey will start early in the morning on a motor able road from Dehradun to Pantwari village. The 85 km distance on road goes via Mussorie, famous Kempty fall and to the Nain Bagh village, from Nain Bagh moving further on the nag Tibba road we finally reach Pantwari village in around four hours. This is our starting point of the 5 km trail reaching to base camp of nag Tibba. The trail in the beginning goes through the Pantwari village and eventually connecting to a shepherd trail going straight up leaving the green farm fields of Pantwari village. On this trail comes the ancient nag temple which holds a great value for local people and is believed to be home of snake’s god. It is a gradual walk that could be enjoyed throughout the time as the trail is well defined on this part of the trek. Moving further on the trail which is almost forest covered one can find a amazing view of the valley and spots to take some memories back home in his camera. After a short but steep walk we reach our base camp of nag Tibba. On reaching the camp site hot food would be served as one can enjoy the meal watching the scenic beauty of the place. Finally, after dark the dinner would be served and we retire to camps for the night.
We start our day early in the morning with a yoga session that will keep us prepared for the long day. After the breakfast is served we would continue our journey on the same trail going further through the thick forest area, it is total of 3 km walk to the top. As we walk there would be some steep sections, but most of the trail is easy ascent. After an hour and half hike, one can get a view of high Garhwal Mountain ranges. On reaching the summit you would find the flag denoting the summit point of Nag Tibba. It is a mesmerizing view from the top as you see yourself surrounded by the High peaks like Bandar pooch, Srikanta, the famous Swargarohini, and Kala Nag. After filling our eyes with beauty of the place we would descent back to base camp following the same trail. On reaching the base camp we would have lunch and time to relax.
In the morning of our final day we will have a yoga session followed by the breakfast; once our gear would be packed we will start our descent to Pantwari village following the same trail we took for our ascent. This day would be a 5 km descent in total and on our way back we will have multiple opportunities to contribute to this amazing place in middle of great Himalayas. After reaching Pantwari our cab/taxi will take you to Dehradun which would be another four-hour journey, and here we would conclude the trek with a warm feeling of the hardship that we put to climb.
