Manikgad lies on the western side of Mumbai Pune highway and is visible from the highway. Earlier history is not much known but the fort must have been a prominent one during Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja’s era. The fort was handed over to Mughals during the Purandar Treaty in 1665 AD. Later it was handed over Kanhoji Angre and later it was intermittently ruled by the Angre & Penshva. There are handful of historical items on the top which include a mortar grinder and a small shrine.
The trek is of easy grade with good endurance level. One needs about two and half hours to ascend and needs about half an hour to explore the top.
