About Arnala Fort
Arnala fort, located in Arnala island near Virar, has a rich history behind it and has been the target of Portuguese, Marathas and British during their respective rule. Standing at the mouth of Vaitarna river, the fort, now in a worn out condition, stands at a testimony to the numerous assaults launched on it by various rulers as a mark of their struggle for power. The main features of the fort are a watch-tower on the outer wall, a large hexagonal fresh water reservoir, temples of Ambakeshwar, Goddess Bhavani, Lord Shiva and the tombs of Shahali and Hajjali. One can take a walk around the entire boundary wall of the external ramparts (walls).
This place makes a perfect one day outing for history-lovers and light trekkers.
